Five smart strategies to launch your business in Flanders

15/07/2025

Starting a business in Flanders offers a powerful springboard for Francophone entrepreneurs. But success in this region requires a deep understanding of local customs — both linguistic and interpersonal. Drawing on Ludwig’s firsthand experience as founder of Prêt-à-Parler and supported by reliable sources, here are five strategies to help you enter this market with confidence and agility.

1.Understand the value of business relationships

In Flanders, as in the rest of Belgium, trust is built over time. While some cultures prioritize sealing the deal, Flemish business culture values genuine interpersonal exchange. According to Expatica, Belgians prefer to get to know their counterparts before making commitments. Ludwig emphasizes the importance of patience: avoid dominating conversations, and resist the urge to push for quick agreements — a reflex often perceived as abrupt or even disrespectful in Flemish business circles.

2.Timekeeping: a marker of professionalism

Punctuality in Flanders is more than a courtesy; it signals respect and professionalism. Showing up late, even by a few minutes, may be perceived as a lack of seriousness. BusinessCulture.org highlights Flanders as particularly strict about timekeeping. Plan your travel carefully, and inform your contacts immediately if delays are unavoidable.

3.Show genuine linguistic effort

English is widely used, but making an effort to speak some Dutch is highly appreciated. Ludwig notes that failing to engage in Dutch or neglecting basic grammar can undermine your credibility. A sincere attempt at Dutch shows a willingness to integrate — a gesture that can foster trust and lead to smoother collaborations.

4.Understand Flemish business practices

Before entering the market, conduct an thorough analysis that factors in local customs — from communication styles and negotiation techniques to company culture. The Flemish market is known for its structure and efficiency. Understanding these norms enables you to tailor your value proposition, pitch, and commercial strategy more effectively.

5.Partner with trusted local experts

Local expertise is invaluable. Collaborating with Flemish accountants, lawyers, or regional consultants can accelerate your integration and provide essential market insights. These professionals know the subtleties and procedures — and often unlock access to relevant networks. Aligning with well-connected local players significantly increases your chances of success.

At Prêt-à-Parler, our mission is to help you master all these facets: not just the language, but also the professional culture, commercial habits, and economic rhythm of Flanders. We empower you not merely to express yourself, but to comprehend, connect, and confidently navigate this dynamic region.

Why Expanding Your Business in Flanders Makes Sense

06/06/2025

Often overlooked in favor of other markets, Flanders is actually one of the most dynamic regions in Europe for entrepreneurs. With an open economy, favorable tax policies, and a strong culture of innovation, this northern Belgian region offers a wealth of advantages for ambitious ventures. If you're considering scaling up, here’s why Flanders should be on your radar.

A Prime Location in Europe’s Logistics Hub

Flanders enjoys an exceptional geographical position, at the center of the Paris–Amsterdam–Frankfurt triangle. This strategic location enables seamless trade with Europe’s key capitals while offering direct access to major consumer markets.

Moreover, Flanders boasts one of the most efficient logistics networks in Europe. It is home to two world-class seaports (Antwerp and Zeebrugge), a dense highway network, and well-integrated rail and waterway connections. This combination makes the region a natural logistical hub for companies looking to expand internationally while maintaining a strong local presence.

A Business-Friendly Tax and Administrative Environment

Belgium’s fiscal policies — particularly in Flanders — are designed to encourage investment and support businesses. Corporate tax rates are set at 25%, with small businesses benefiting from a reduced rate of 20% on their first €100,000 in profits. But beyond taxation, the region’s streamlined administrative processes and business incentives make a real difference.

In Flanders, setting up or expanding a business is often faster, more straightforward, and less restrictive than in other regions. For instance, there is no requirement for a basic management diploma to establish a company. The result? A stable and transparent framework designed to save businesses both time and money.

A Thriving Innovation Ecosystem

Flanders isn’t just welcoming to businesses — it actively fosters innovation. The region features a dense network of startups, SMEs, tech firms, leading universities, incubators, and clusters specializing in key sectors like life sciences, logistics, artificial intelligence, green chemistry, and healthcare.

This interconnected business landscape promotes collaboration, applied research, and technology transfer. Companies benefit from a stimulating environment conducive to rapid growth, innovative product development, and international expansion. For entrepreneurs, Flanders offers a unique opportunity to embed themselves within a European economic hub — without leaving Belgium.

A Multilingual Market with a Pragmatic Business Culture

Flanders stands out for its highly skilled, multilingual workforce. English, Dutch, French, and German are widely spoken, facilitating communication with international clients, business partners and suppliers.

Equally important is the region’s business culture, built on efficiency, punctuality, transparency, and a results-driven approach. For foreign entrepreneurs, this translates to a structured, predictable professional environment founded on trust. While proficiency in Dutch enhances credibility, understanding local business practices and expectations is the real key to success.

Strong Support for Foreign Investors

One of Flanders’ greatest advantages is the high-quality support offered to businesses looking to establish operations there. Organizations like Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) provide tailored, free-of-charge expert assistance. Their role includes market analysis, site selection, partner sourcing, and navigating available public incentives and grants.

This proactive support reduces the uncertainties associated with international expansion. By working with local stakeholders, entrepreneurs save time, avoid costly mistakes, and accelerate their integration into the Flemish economic landscape.

Need Help Navigating the Flemish Business Scene?

Capitalizing on the opportunities in Flanders requires more than just Dutch language skills. Entrepreneurs need to grasp the nuances of local business culture, the implicit expectations in professional exchanges, and the foundations of trust-based relationships.

This is precisely what Prêt-à-Parler offers. Our training program is designed for French- and English-speaking entrepreneurs aiming for long-term success in Flanders.

Flanders: A Gateway to a New Entrepreneurial Dimension

Expanding your business in Flanders isn’t just about moving to a different region — it’s about broadening your perspective, entering a demanding but rewarding economic environment, and embracing a structured, forward-thinking entrepreneurial culture. Whether it’s its strategic location, innovation ecosystem, attractive tax policies, or results-driven mindset, Flanders presents a compelling case for entrepreneurs seeking growth.

Beyond the numbers and structural advantages, success in Flanders demands an in-depth understanding of its customs, business codes, and language. This is exactly where Prêt-à-Parler comes in — not just as a language-training provider, but as a bridge to doing business the Flemish way.

How Dutch really changes your professional life in Flanders

01/05/2025

In Flanders, Dutch is not just a language: it's a key. A key to finding a job, developing a professional network, growing your business and integrating fully into local society.

For workers and entrepreneurs alike, learning Dutch opens doors that no other skill can replace. That's why it's such a strategic and personal investment.

Working in Flanders: more than an advantage, it's a necessity

Flanders has a strong economy and a high demand for talent in a variety of sectors, including logistics, health, construction, technology and industry. For non-Flemish speaking workers, it represents a real employment opportunity. But this opportunity is closely linked to one condition: a good command of Dutch.

Recent studies by The Brussels Times and Belga News Agency reveal that language is still the main barrier to employment for newcomers to Flanders. While some employers are prepared to recruit non-Dutch speakers, it is often for entry-level positions. As soon as you want to progress, communicate with colleagues or take on responsibilities, language becomes essential.

Understanding Dutch makes it easier to integrate into a team, better understand the employer's expectations, take part in discussions and follow in-house training courses. This strengthens the confidence of superiors and facilitates progression to qualified positions. What's more, this skill is also an asset when it comes to negotiating a better salary or securing a long-term contract. In other words, speaking Dutch is not just about ‘making a good impression’: it is a prerequisite for a stable, stimulating and lasting career in Flanders.

Doing business in Flanders: speaking the language of the market

For an allophone entrepreneur - and particularly for a Walloon entrepreneur - Flanders is a logical, neighbouring and very attractive market. However, many managers prefer to focus their development on France, which is perceived as being more accessible in terms of language. This choice is often based on a lack of knowledge of Flemish opportunities, but also on a fear: that of not mastering the customer's language.

This is a strategic mistake. Flanders is not just an ‘economic neighbour’: it's a market in its own right, with its own codes, players, regional subsidies and very specific entrepreneurial culture. When it comes to doing business in Flanders, speaking Dutch is a concrete lever for growth.

Mastering the language enables you to establish a direct link with customers, understand market expectations, adapt your commercial offering and gain credibility. It also enables you to interact effectively with local partners, access calls for tender and benefit from subsidies and support schemes offered by organisations such as VLAIO www.vlaio.be/nl/over-ons/vlaio or Flanders Investment & Trade https://corporate.flandersinvestmentandtrade.com/en - whose documents, contacts and processes are mainly in Dutch.

As an OECD report reminds us, language plays a key role in the economic integration of foreign entrepreneurs. Speaking Dutch reduces friction, reassures Flemish partners and multiplies opportunities. It is also an asset when it comes to joining business networks, where linguistic proximity quickly becomes a business accelerator.

Language as a driving force for integration and success

Speaking Dutch doesn't just make work or business easier - it profoundly transforms the relationship you have with your environment. Understanding what is being said around you, being able to strike up a conversation in a shop, chatting with neighbours, keeping up with administrative formalities or getting information from the local media: these are all everyday gestures that, without the language, can become obstacles to integration.

A study conducted by the Arteveldehogeschool shows that knowledge of Dutch significantly improves the well-being, sense of belonging and social participation of expatriates in Flanders. People who speak the language feel more at ease, more legitimate and more firmly rooted in their new surroundings.

Beyond the practical aspect, speaking the local language is also a mark of respect. It shows a willingness to reach out to others, to adapt, and to be a full player in Flemish society. Whether you're an employee or an entrepreneur, this attitude is often noticed, appreciated... and rewarded.

Dutch, your best investment in Flanders

In a context as rich as that of Flanders, Dutch is much more than a communication tool. It is a real professional and personal lever. For non-native workers, it's the key to wider and more stable access to the job market, with real prospects for advancement. For entrepreneurs, it is a factor of credibility, efficiency and growth, enabling them to approach the Flemish market with confidence and ambition.

But beyond the figures and studies, language plays a human role. It creates ties, it opens doors, it shows a willingness to integrate and to understand others. In Flanders, that makes all the difference - whether in a meeting room, a job interview, a business negotiation or a simple everyday conversation.

At Prêt-à-Parler, we offer an innovative, practical approach tailored to your professional goals. We focus on lively learning, directly connected to the reality of the Flemish business world, giving you the linguistic and cultural tools to succeed.

Learning Dutch with Prêt-à-Parler means investing in your professional future, but also choosing a humane, effective and action-oriented method. Together, we can turn your project into a success.

Because in Flanders, speaking Dutch is not just about ‘speaking local’: it's about deciding to play a full part in your own success.

Wat Nederlands echt betekent voor je professionele leven in Vlaanderen

Ludwig: The Art of Reinvention — and of Teaching Dutch Differently

14/04/2025

Some lives follow a clear, linear path — planned out since childhood. Others, like Ludwig’s, are filled with unexpected turns, rich experiences, and above all, deep humanity. At 58, he founded Prêt-à-Parler, a company dedicated to teaching Dutch to French- and English-speaking entrepreneurs. But this project is merely the latest chapter in a unique, inspiring life story marked by resilience and reinvention.

Time as an Ally

“I’m a late bloomer,” Ludwig says drily — and he’s not kidding. After an initial attempt at higher education that didn’t work out, he truly entered the workforce at age 26, in a technical field: selling and installing measuring systems on Belgium’s inland waterways. He spent ten years there before taking an unexpected turn just before turning 40: he returned to university and earned a degree in translation.

But why stop there? He learned to sail, took up the saxophone, became a father at 42, and launched his own business at 58. Where others might slow down, Ludwig speeds up. “The time I lost in my youth — I want to reclaim it in the second half of my life,” he says. This personal philosophy now infuses the way he teaches, lives, and inspires others.

Teaching: An Unexpected Calling

It was almost by chance that he found himself in front of a classroom. Wanting to improve his French, Ludwig began teaching at a francophone school. But very quickly, enthusiasm took over. In teaching, he discovered something translation never offered him: human connection, shared energy, and the dynamic of the group.

“The social aspect of teaching makes me much happier than the solitary life of a translator,” he says, with disarming honesty. That realization led him to fully commit to education — and eventually to launch Prêt-à-Parler, a learning space designed specifically for entrepreneurs looking to grow their business in Flanders.

A Method Rooted in Real Life

His teaching approach is simple but highly effective: teach Dutch not as an abstract academic subject, but as a real-world communication tool. “Language is not an end in itself. It’s a means. The topic needs to be relevant and engaging for the learner — that’s what opens the emotional filter, the key to successful teaching,” he explains.

With entrepreneurs, the dynamic is particularly powerful. Their motivation is usually intrinsic and practical: expanding into Flanders, understanding the local market, or building partnerships. Ludwig channels that drive into a personalized pedagogy: authentic materials, a focus on the Flemish economy, practical and interactive exercises. The result? Effective learning, firmly anchored in the professional realities of his students.

Prêt-à-Parler is not just another language school. It’s the result of a rich, unconventional life journey, fueled by a fierce desire to share and guide. Thanks to Ludwig’s experience and vision, learners get more than just a course: they find a vibrant, stimulating environment — and a passionate coach who helps them grow at their own pace, always in the right direction.
